Birmingham Wheels Adventure Park,

Adderley Road South, Saltley

Birmingham, B8 1AD

From outside Birmingham, go to  http://birminghamwheelspark.org/ for a good map and directions

To find the Skating Track, turn into the Wheels Park  (opposite the school) and go straight up the hill, past the car racing track on your left, and the speed skating track is atthe top of the hill on your right.

If the barrier is shut please park your car temporarily in the Wheels bottom car park and walk up the hill.We can then get someone to let your car in!

By bus, catch the 8A bus which drops you outside the Wheels Park entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions -  Saturday Morning Skate Sessions

I can't skate very well - can I still come?

Our beginner club on a Saturday  morning is for all ages and abilities.  Just come along and we will sort you out when you get here!! Although you are always welcome, the best time to start skating if you have not skated much before is spring through to summer, as it can get quite cold over the winter months if you're just getting going.

What age do you have to be to skate?

Well, from any age that a skate will fit, basically! We encourage parents of junior school children to stay for the sessions, but parents of children under 8 must stay for all sessions. The youngest age you can actually race is 6 years old. There is no upper age limit.....

Do I need my own skates?

If you want to skate the first time you come, you may prefer to bring your own skates. We do have skates available to lend you - if you are planning to come and can send us your shoe size via the contact us page we will be able to sort  some out before you arrive.

Do I need safety equipment?

You will not be allowed to skate if you do not wear a safety helmet. Skaters under 13 must wear wristguards. We particularly encourage all junior members to wear the full safety gear (helmet, wristguards, kneepads and elbow pads). Don't worry though - if you do not have these we can lend you some.

What should I wear?

In the summer you should wear track suit bottoms and a long t-shirt. Clothing should be comfortable  and cover all your joints. You will need to wear long socks for your skates to fit comfortably. It is a good idea to bring a spare pair in case you need a bit of extra padding in your skates.  Bring some sort of waterproof or coat in case it rains!

In the winter as above but wear more layers. A fairly thin hat will fit under your helmet if you have one, but the most important piece of winter kit is gloves, as your hands tend to get cold in the wind even if you are hot. Magic gloves are great as you can wear them easily over your wristguards.

 Food and drink?

Make sure you have breakfast before you come as skating is quite energetic. Always bring a drink of water or very dilute juice as you will get hot skating (even in the winter)

What will happen when I get there?

Just ask for Sharon!  If she is busy, one of our other coaches will help you and sort out any equipment that you need.

The session usually consists of a group warm up session, followed by  skates-on.  Beginner skaters then go into the middle of the track, where it is flat, and have a go with the support of a coach.  Skaters who are confident enough/more experienced skaters can stay in the middle or go straight onto the track and skate round steadily for a while. The rest of the session then varies from week to week, but might include skills practice, races, handicaps, and games of all sorts.  Finally everyone takes their skates off, and the whole group does a cool down.

How much does it cost?

Saturday morning sessions cost £3 per session including rec skate and safety equipment provision if needed.

I have another question which is not answered here - what do I do?

Please just ask via the Contact Us page, or just come to a session and we will answer whatever you want to know!  We look forward to seeing you!
